How to choose incense sticks: fragrance, format and pack size

Choose incense sticks by working through three questions: which fragrance do you enjoy, which format suits your holder and space, and how much do you want to buy? A familiar fragrance in a smaller pack is a useful starting point when you are exploring a new range.

Start with the fragrance description

Look for the notes you already like rather than choosing only by the name on the box. Floral, woody and spicy descriptions help narrow the choice, although a fragrance can combine more than one of these characters.

  • Janak 555, 250 g has a powdery, woody and floral fragrance profile with sandalwood, rose and jasmine notes.
  • Maharshi, 50 g brings together cedarwood, sandalwood and patchouli notes.
  • Keshar Chandan, 100 g combines geranium and rose with saffron and sandalwood notes.

These descriptions explain the fragrance character. A named note is not, by itself, a complete ingredient list. Check the individual product information when a particular ingredient matters to you.

Choose a format your setup can accommodate

Browse masala incense sticks and scented incense sticks to compare the available fragrances. Use the product page to check the particular pack and format rather than assuming that every item in a range is identical.

For a longer format, 555 Extra Long contains ten 16-inch sticks. Check that your holder supports the stick securely and that an appropriate tray can catch falling ash along its length. A longer stick needs more clearance; length alone does not establish an exact burning time.

If you prefer a different form of incense, compare dhoop sticks, cups and loose dhoop. These can require different holders or burners.

Read the quantity before comparing packs

Some packs are labelled in grams and others by the number of sticks. Janak 555’s 250 g pack and its 16-inch, ten-stick pack are different formats, so their headline quantities are not directly interchangeable. Our pack-size guide explains how to compare like-for-like options.

Make space for safe use

Follow the directions on the pack. Use an appropriate stable, heat-resistant holder on a non-flammable surface, keep clear of curtains and other combustible materials, and allow ventilation. Keep burning incense away from children and pets, never leave it unattended, and let the holder and ash cool before handling.

Common questions

Which fragrance should I try first?

Start with notes you already enjoy. If you are unsure, compare the fragrance descriptions and choose a smaller available pack before stocking up. Personal preference is more useful than a universal “best fragrance” claim.

Does a larger pack mean a stronger fragrance?

No. Pack quantity tells you how much product you are buying; it does not measure fragrance strength. Compare the product’s format and fragrance description separately.
