How to store incense sticks and dhoop so the fragrance keeps
by Janak Perfumers on Nov 04, 2026
Incense is meant to be used, but a few habits help a pack stay pleasant from the first stick to the last.

Moisture and air
Damp sticks and dhoop can be harder to light and may not smoulder evenly. Store packs in a dry cupboard, not next to a sink, a bathroom wall or a kitchen stove. In the monsoon, keep them off the floor and away from windows.
Keep boxes and pouches closed
After taking out a stick, close the box or fold the pouch shut. Keeping air out helps hold the fragrance in the sticks and keeps dust off. If a pouch does not reseal, place it in a clean, dry container with a lid. Keep different fragrances in separate packs so they do not mix.
Keep away from heat and sunlight
Store packs away from direct sunlight, lamps, the diya and the stove. Never store incense or dhoop next to where you burn it: keep the pack and the matches away from the holder while a stick is lit.
Using older stock
Use older packs first. If a stick has absorbed moisture, let it sit in a dry room for a while before lighting. Dhoop cups should be dry and intact; set aside any that are crumbling.
What about shelf life?
We do not give a fixed shelf life here. Check the pack for any date or storage instruction, and contact us if you have a question about a specific product.
Buying for a longer period? A smaller pack such as 555 in 50 g (₹90) suits occasional use; 555 in 250 g (₹375) suits daily use. For dhoop, see dhoop sticks, cups and loose dhoop.
Burning incense and dhoop safely
Place sticks in a holder and cups on a heat-resistant burner, on a stable surface that catches the ash. Keep the space ventilated and away from curtains, paper and other flammable materials. Keep children and pets away, never leave burning incense or dhoop unattended, and let ash and holders cool before handling.
